$500M for Virtual Biology Initiative, Funded by Zuckerbergs

Biohub has initiated the Virtual Biology Initiative in an effort to mobilize a worldwide movement aimed at establishing an Open Data Foundation for AI-Enhanced Biology. This groundbreaking five-year project, launched with a commitment of $500 million, invites the global scientific community to participate in creating predictive models of human cells to expedite the development of cures and preventive measures for various diseases.

The announcement was made by Biohub in REDWOOD CITY, CA on April 29, 2026. The organization plans to allocate $100 million to kickstart a collaborative global data generation endeavor that surpasses the capabilities of any single institution, and an additional $400 million will be dedicated to producing extensive datasets and advancing cutting-edge technologies for biological measurement, imaging, and manipulation.

While the vision of accurate predictive cell models is within reach due to existing scientific and technological groundwork, achieving this objective demands a significant increase in available data. To achieve this, a coordinated effort involving prominent institutions and funders is vital.

Biohub is committed to providing resources such as high-performance computing power, advanced biological and AI technologies, and support for generating open-access data intended for the benefit of the worldwide scientific community.

Collaborating with institutions like the Allen Institute, Arc Institute, Broad Institute, Wellcome Sanger Institute, as well as consortia like the Human Cell Atlas and Human Protein Atlas, Biohub aims to lead a concerted global drive towards building predictive cell models. This united front will involve joint efforts towards a shared goal while also allowing individual initiatives to contribute independently.

In partnership with NVIDIA as a key technology ally, Biohub will leverage accelerated computing infrastructure and specialized software alongside technical expertise to process vast datasets. This collaboration will enable Biohub and its network of partners to create impactful biological models through data training and deployment.

The development of precise predictive cell models holds the promise of enhancing our understanding of cellular mechanisms and unraveling disease etiology. These models could facilitate digital inquiries on an unprecedented scale compared to current laboratory limitations, thus expediting scientific breakthroughs that may pave the way for innovative medical approaches and novel therapies for complex ailments.
