As millions of people begin asking AI systems about symptoms, diagnoses and treatment options, artificial intelligence is moving closer to the beginning of the healthcare information journey — changing not only how people search, but which information they encounter first.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
For years, the typical online health search followed a familiar path: someone noticed a symptom, searched Google, reviewed several results and clicked through to a medical website.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to change that sequence.
Some people are now asking ChatGPT and other AI assistants health questions directly. Others are still using traditional search engines but increasingly encounter AI-generated summaries before they ever visit a website.
The shift is already measurable.
OpenAI reported in January that more than 40 million people globally turn to ChatGPT each day with healthcare questions, while seven in ten healthcare-related ChatGPT conversations occur outside normal clinic hours.
Independent polling shows the behavior extends beyond a small group of early adopters. KFF reported in June that 29% of U.S. adults use AI tools or chatbots for health information at least monthly, nearly double the 17% measured two years earlier.
At the same time, AI is moving directly into conventional search. BrightEdge found Google’s AI Overviews appeared for 89% of the healthcare keywords it tracked in December 2025, including 93% of symptom-related queries and 100% of treatment queries. Google was considerably more cautious with local and highly sensitive health searches.
The result is an important change:
People do not necessarily have to deliberately choose an AI chatbot to receive AI-generated health information.
AI can increasingly appear at the beginning of the search itself.
WHY IT MATTERS
Healthcare information is different from asking AI for a restaurant recommendation or help writing an email.
People may be trying to understand symptoms, interpret a medical test, compare treatments or decide whether something warrants professional care.
KFF found that 27% of adults had used AI to look up physical-health symptoms or conditions, while 19% had used it to understand tests, diagnoses or treatment options and 16% had used it to help decide whether to seek medical care.
That means the growing role of AI is not simply a story about website traffic.
It is increasingly a story about information gatekeeping.
When an AI system summarizes information from multiple sources into one answer, the user may never see many of the original sources that previously competed for attention.
That makes the reliability, sourcing and presentation of health information increasingly important.
Google already treats health information as part of its Your Money or Your Life — YMYL — category, where inaccurate information could significantly affect someone’s health, financial stability or safety. Google says strong signals of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and particularly trust are important when evaluating this type of content.
WHO BENEFITS
Patients and consumers gain immediate access to explanations of medical terminology, symptoms, treatments and questions they may want to discuss with a healthcare professional.
Healthcare organizations with authoritative content may gain new opportunities to have their information surfaced through AI-powered search and assistants.
AI companies and search platforms become increasingly important gateways between people and the enormous amount of medical information available online.
People seeking information outside normal medical hours may particularly benefit from having a tool available when a doctor’s office or clinic is closed.
WHO LOSES
Healthcare websites dependent primarily on search traffic could see fewer visitors if users receive satisfactory answers directly from an AI response or search summary.
Publishers producing generic or recycled medical content may have a harder time standing out as search engines increasingly emphasize original, useful and trustworthy information. Google’s current guidance specifically encourages unique, non-commodity content rather than material that simply repackages what already exists elsewhere.
There is also a larger risk.
Patients can lose when inaccurate, incomplete or poorly contextualized information appears authoritative simply because an AI system presents it confidently.
AI-generated health information can be useful, but it is not automatically correct and should not be confused with professional medical diagnosis or treatment.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The competition for health information may increasingly shift from simply ranking first in a list of search results to becoming one of the trusted sources an AI system uses when constructing an answer.
That could push hospitals, medical publishers, healthcare companies and other organizations to place greater emphasis on identifiable experts, medical review, original research, transparent sourcing and clearly structured information.
Google itself acknowledged the broader change in May, saying people are increasingly using generative AI experiences to find information and publishing new guidance specifically for appearing within AI-powered search.
But traditional search and healthcare professionals are not disappearing.
They remain major sources of health information, and AI is not yet the dominant first stop for most people.
The more important signal is that another doorway has opened.
For a growing number of people, the first explanation of a symptom, medical term or treatment option may no longer come from a webpage they deliberately selected.
It may come from an answer assembled by AI.
