Students who opened social-media accounts around ages 11–12 later showed significantly weaker performance in math and their native language than similar students who waited — suggesting the timing of social-media exposure may matter more than previously understood.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

A new study published in Nature Human Behaviour followed the academic histories of 5,227 students in northern Italy, combining detailed surveys about when they first opened social-media accounts with standardized test results collected throughout their school years.

Researchers compared students who began using social media in sixth, seventh or eighth grade with students who waited until ninth grade or later. The groups were statistically matched so that their academic performance was comparable before the earliest students entered social media.

The largest differences appeared among the earliest users.

Students who opened an account in sixth grade — typically around ages 11–12 — scored about 0.22 standard deviations lower in Italian and 0.27 lower in mathematics by tenth grade compared with later adopters. Researchers note that an effect around 0.20 standard deviations is sometimes compared in education research with roughly six months of schooling, although there is no official conversion between the test scores and months of education.

Seventh-grade adopters also showed meaningful declines. The effects among students beginning in eighth grade were smaller and less statistically robust.

WHY IT MATTERS

The important signal isn’t simply that children spend too much time online.

The age at which social media enters a child’s life may itself matter.

Students who begin earlier accumulate more years in an environment built around notifications, constant connectivity, short-form content and competing demands for attention during a period when study habits and cognitive routines are still developing.

The researchers found that what they call “smartphone pervasiveness” — checking phones around bedtime, upon waking, during homework and at school — could account for a meaningful portion of the academic effect. In exploratory analysis, it accounted for roughly 33%–47% of the mathematics effect and 15%–34% of the Italian-language effect, although that part of the analysis is correlational and does not prove the mechanism.

That distinction matters.

The problem may not simply be what children see on social media. It may also be what constant digital interruption displaces: concentration, homework, reading, sleep and uninterrupted thinking.

WHO BENEFITS

Parents, schools and educators gain another piece of evidence supporting more deliberate decisions about when children receive smartphones and unrestricted social-media access.

Developers of parental controls, age-assurance systems and healthier digital environments could also see increased demand as policymakers and families look for alternatives to an all-or-nothing approach.

WHO LOSES

Social-media companies have traditionally benefited from capturing users early and making their platforms part of everyday life.

If additional research confirms that earlier adoption produces measurable educational consequences, pressure could grow for higher age thresholds, stronger parental controls and restrictions on how platforms engage younger users.

Students themselves may bear the biggest cost when unrestricted access arrives before they have developed the habits necessary to manage constant digital distraction.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

This is one study involving students from one region of Italy, and researchers themselves urge caution when applying the findings more broadly. More work will be needed across countries, platforms and different educational systems.

But the study strengthens an increasingly important question for parents and policymakers:

Maybe the debate shouldn’t only be about how much social media children use. It should also be about how early we introduce it.

There was also one fascinating exception.

Researchers found no significant decline in English performance. One possible explanation is that social media exposes Italian students to large amounts of English-language content, potentially providing informal language practice even while other academic subjects suffer.

That makes the larger signal even more interesting: digital technology may not be uniformly harmful or beneficial. Its effects may depend on when it arrives, how it is used and what it replaces.
