As AI becomes more capable, some schools are drawing a new line: students may need to learn how to think, reason and solve problems without AI before being taught how to use it as a productivity tool.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Some major education institutions are beginning to restrict when students can use artificial intelligence — not necessarily because they oppose AI, but because they are questioning when students should begin relying on it.
The University of Chicago Law School is barring phones, laptops and tablets from required first-year classes as part of a broader strategy emphasizing the ability to work with AI, without AI and about AI. UC Berkeley Law has also restricted generative AI in graded academic work.
The movement extends well beyond law school.
New York City has imposed a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for students from 2-K through eighth grade, affecting nearly 600,000 students. High school students will still receive AI literacy instruction, and a limited number will participate in supervised AI pilots.
The message is becoming clearer:
Learning how to use AI and learning how to think without it may need to be treated as two different skills.
WHY IT MATTERS
AI changes one of education’s oldest assumptions.
For generations, students were expected to struggle through problems because the struggle itself helped develop reasoning, memory, judgment and expertise.
Generative AI can remove some of that struggle almost instantly.
Ask the question.
Generate the explanation.
Rewrite the essay.
Summarize the reading.
Solve the problem.
That can make learning faster.
But educators are increasingly asking whether making the process easier can sometimes interfere with developing the underlying ability.
The issue is no longer simply whether students should use AI.
It is when.
WHO BENEFITS
Students who develop strong foundational skills before becoming dependent on AI may eventually become more capable AI users.
Teachers gain greater control over when technology enters the learning process.
Employers could also benefit if graduates arrive with both independent reasoning skills and the ability to use AI effectively.
AI companies may ultimately benefit as well if education systems develop clearer standards for age-appropriate and responsible use rather than responding with permanent bans.
WHO LOSES
Education technology companies selling student-facing AI products could face slower adoption, particularly in elementary and middle schools.
Students who become overly dependent on AI may also find themselves at a disadvantage when they encounter situations requiring independent judgment.
And schools that completely reject AI could create the opposite problem: graduates who can reason independently but are unprepared for workplaces where AI has become part of everyday productivity.
That is why this is not simply a battle between AI and no AI.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Expect schools to begin creating clearer stages for AI use.
Younger students may receive stronger protections while foundational skills are developing.
Older students may receive more structured AI literacy training.
College and professional programs may increasingly distinguish between assignments designed to test independent reasoning and assignments where AI use is expected.
The long-term model could become:
Learn the skill.
Prove you can do it yourself.
Then learn how AI can make you better at it.
The education system may be moving toward a new rule for the AI age:
Before students learn how to think with machines, schools may increasingly require them to prove they can still think without them.
