Cathay Pacific and Google are expanding a trial that uses AI to predict where persistent aircraft contrails are likely to form.
Contrails are the white trails sometimes left behind airplanes. Under certain atmospheric conditions, they can persist, spread and trap heat in the atmosphere.
The system provides pilots with forecasts that may help them avoid those areas through small altitude adjustments. More than 100 Cathay Pacific flights participated in the initial phase. A second phase will collect additional operational data and expand testing.
WHY IT MATTERS
Most efforts to reduce aviation’s climate impact depend on cleaner fuels, new aircraft or major infrastructure changes.
Contrail avoidance offers another possibility: use better information to reduce some warming effects from aircraft already in service.
AI can combine weather, satellite and flight data to identify narrow atmospheric zones where persistent contrails are more likely to develop. Pilots can then consider whether those zones can be safely avoided.
