AI IS MOVING OFF THE SCREEN — AND ONTO YOUR BODY
AI is beginning to do more than answer questions and generate content. A new generation of devices is learning to sense what the human body is doing — and change how physical hardware responds in real time.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
IFA 2026 showcased a wave of consumer technology built around a different relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
Instead of requiring people to type a prompt or tap a screen, these devices increasingly use sensors, cameras, microphones and motion data to understand what a person is doing.
Examples included exoskeletons designed to recognize different types of movement and adjust physical assistance, rehabilitation wearables that monitor how a device is being used, massage systems that adapt recovery routines based on physical readings, and AI earbuds that capture conversations and turn them into transcripts, summaries and tasks.
Other products are moving information even closer to the body, including augmented-reality dive masks that place critical data directly into a diver’s field of view.
WHY IT MATTERS
The first phase of the generative-AI boom largely happened behind a screen.
This next phase could be physical.
The interaction is beginning to shift from:
Human → Screen → AI
to:
Human Body → Sensors → AI → Physical Response
That means the body itself can become part of the computer interface.
Instead of waiting for a person to deliberately issue a command, future devices may increasingly interpret movement, sound, pressure, location, physical condition and activity automatically — then respond while the person is still moving.
WHO BENEFITS
Consumers could gain technology that feels more natural and requires less active control.
People recovering from injuries may get more adaptive rehabilitation tools. Older adults and people with mobility limitations could benefit from wearable assistance. Athletes could receive more personalized recovery support. Workers may eventually use systems that respond to fatigue, posture or physical strain.
Technology companies also gain an enormous new market: AI that does not simply live inside software, but becomes embedded in clothing, medical devices, fitness equipment, hearing products, eyewear and other physical systems.
WHO LOSES
Traditional consumer-electronics companies that treat AI primarily as a software feature could fall behind manufacturers designing AI directly into physical products.
There are also new risks for consumers.
Devices that understand the body may generate extremely personal information about movement, health indicators, voice, habits and behavior.
As AI becomes more physically connected to people, questions surrounding privacy, data ownership, security and medical claims will become harder to ignore.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Expect AI wearables to move beyond watches, earbuds and glasses.
The bigger competition may become which companies can build technology capable of understanding the human body well enough to respond to it safely, accurately and continuously.
For decades, humans learned how to operate computers.
Now computers are beginning to learn how humans move.
