We ‘want to encourage other people in our generation to be the types of people who do not even want to have an AI friend’: Appstinence was founder on the fight to help people step back from tech and reconnect with real life

The founder of Appstinence is determined to inspire individuals in their age group to shun the idea of having an AI companion. Gabriela Nguyen, a Silicon Valley native, had early exposure to social media through her iPod Touch at the age of 10. Her journey through various devices and platforms led her to establish Appstinence, a non-profit organization focused on assisting people in breaking free from addictive technology.

Nguyen, who grew disillusioned with the pervasive role of technology in her life, founded Appstinence with a small team while studying at Harvard’s School of Education. Reflecting on her experience during the pandemic, she realized how deeply intertwined her life had become with digital products, prompting her to take action.

Appstinence advocates for reducing reliance on technology through their “5D Method” – Decrease, Deactivate, Delete, Downgrade, Depart. Collaborating with experts like Jonathan Haidt from New York University, the organization offers services such as private coaching and educational sessions globally.

The initiative resonates not only with Gen Z but also individuals of all ages grappling with tech addiction. By fostering a mindset shift away from constant tech engagement, Appstinence aims to empower individuals to reclaim control over their digital lives.
