Grindr’s Chief Product Officer AJ Balance discussed the company’s AI and advertising strategies with Business Insider. He mentioned that 70% of Grindr’s code is now being checked in through AI, with engineers overseeing the process and coordinating agents. When it comes to pricing AI features, Balance emphasized that product prices are determined based on the value they offer users.
Grindr is currently undergoing significant changes, both internally and externally. The company is in the midst of a major AI overhaul, equipping engineers and designers with a range of new tools. Users are witnessing these changes, particularly through the testing of the app’s new premium Edge subscription tier at varying high prices.
The issue of advertising has long been a challenge for Grindr, with questions arising about ad frequency and the difficulty of closing mobile gaming ads. During an extensive discussion at Grindr’s West Hollywood headquarters, AJ Balance shed light on various aspects like team expansion and the impact of AI on job roles within the company.
Regarding Grindr software engineers’ interaction with AI tools, Balance highlighted the use of various platforms such as Claude Code, OpenAI, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Codex, LLMs for writing tasks, Gemini, Grok, Midjourney, Sora, and ComfyUI among others. He emphasized that AI adoption is positively transforming the role of software engineers by shifting focus towards code review rather than constant coding.
As Grindr rolls out its AI-driven Edge subscription model with premium pricing, Balance explained that product pricing reflects the value it provides to users. While Edge is positioned as a luxury offering catering to users seeking enhanced connections and experiences, feedback from users influences ongoing product development and pricing strategies.
In response to concerns about subscription fatigue and ad density on Grindr, Balance assured that user feedback drives decisions regarding paywalls, ads, and ad formats. The company remains committed to enhancing the free user experience while exploring innovative ad formats like reward ads.
Despite challenges posed by privacy considerations and evolving user needs in LGBTQ+ communities worldwide, Grindr continues to prioritize user privacy while exploring ways to enhance user experiences without compromising data security. The unique grid-based chat model sets Grindr apart from traditional swipe-based dating apps, offering users a diverse range of connections and experiences without experiencing swipe fatigue commonly associated with other platforms.
