During my Amtrak journey on the Pennsylvanian from Pennsylvania to NYC, I opted for the convenience and amenities of traveling in business class over flying. The business-class ticket provided comfort, complimentary WiFi, and beautiful views along the way. While the comfy seat and free drinks were enjoyable, I wouldn’t upgrade every time due to the availability of similar amenities in coach at a lower cost.
One advantage of business-class tickets is that they are fully refundable without any fees for changing them, unlike coach tickets. The spacious seats on the Pennsylvanian allowed me to keep a small bag handy throughout the journey, whether in business class or coach. In business class, I appreciated the extra legroom and room to relax in my seat.
Storing my suitcase in the luggage racks near the car doors and keeping my laptop bag in front of me, I found myself comfortable even with another passenger sitting beside me. The train’s footrests and adjustable tray tables made it easier to maintain good posture while working or eating during the trip.
The scenic views through the Appalachian mountains and bustling cityscape of Philadelphia never fail to captivate me during this familiar route. Despite being a vegetarian with limited options on the cafΓ© car menu, I brought my own snacks like fruits and chips for sustenance.
Although delays occurred during the journey, the Amtrak staff’s gesture of offering free snack boxes boosted morale among passengers. My business-class ticket included complimentary beverages such as soft drinks, coffee, and tea, which kept me refreshed throughout the trip.
Dressing in layers was essential due to varying temperatures on the train, especially during stops in different towns. The train’s WiFi was not always reliable, prompting me to have a backup network for work-related tasks.
Balancing work on my novel with breaks for reading and social media engagement helped pass the time swiftly. Eventually arriving at Penn Station after eight hours, I felt content yet slightly restless from being confined within the train. Overall, upgrading to business class for this trip was justified by the added comfort and conducive environment it provided for work and relaxation alike.
