The Bloomberg Terminal Is Getting an AI Makeover, Like It or Not

The Bloomberg Terminal is renowned for its complexity, evoking strong dedication from users. Skilled traders are distinguished by their ability to navigate through the vast array of data on the platform to uncover valuable insights. However, with an increasing amount of data being inputted into the terminal, there is a risk of losing valuable information. Shawn Edwards, Bloomberg’s chief technology officer, expressed concerns about this issue, stating that important details may be overlooked or the process may become too time-consuming.

In an effort to address this challenge, Bloomberg is experimenting with a chatbot-style interface called ASKB, which utilises various language models. The goal is to assist finance professionals in streamlining labour-intensive tasks and enabling them to analyse abstract investment ideas using natural language prompts.

At present, the ASKB beta version is accessible to approximately one-third of the Terminal’s 375,000 users, with no specific release date announced for the full version.

During an interview with WIRED at Bloomberg’s lavish London headquarters in early April, Edwards elaborated on the motivation behind revamping the terminal and discussed potential concerns from traditionalists regarding the changes and Bloomberg’s efforts to resolve any issues that arise.

The core objective of implementing generative AI is to aid users in identifying crucial insights and synthesising a comprehensive perspective based on specific concepts. ASKB aims to help users extract untapped opportunities from the massive dataset available on the platform.

In essence, ASKB seeks to empower users to explore complex ideas efficiently by providing quick access to relevant information. The tool does not guarantee instant success but rather enhances the analytical capabilities of experienced professionals by enabling them to conduct in-depth research and analysis more effectively.

By utilising workflow templates and customisable queries within ASKB, analysts can streamline their research processes and receive concise summaries of key information related to their enquiries. The system allows for automation of repetitive tasks typically assigned to junior analysts, prompting discussions about potential impacts on employment dynamics within the industry.

To ensure accuracy and reliability, rigorous validation processes are implemented at each stage of developing AI functionalities within ASKB.
