A new AI-powered research system can recognize individual wild capuchin monkeys and automatically conduct touchscreen cognitive tests, giving scientists another way to study animal intelligence in natural environments.

Researchers from Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed CapuchinAI, a portable system designed to automate cognitive testing of wild capuchin monkeys.

The platform combines AI facial recognition with touchscreen-based learning tasks and an automated food-reward system.

When a monkey approaches the research station, the system can identify the individual, present customized cognitive tasks, record its responses, and provide food rewards for successful completion.

During field testing at Costa Rica’s Taboga Forest Reserve, researchers reported that the facial-recognition system identified individual capuchins with approximately 97% accuracy after being trained on images and video.
