Tuya Smart’s mobile AI companion can respond to calls for help, connect families through live video, and assist with daily activities as artificial intelligence enters independent senior living.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Tuya Smart has introduced Doova, a mobile AI companion robot designed to help older adults maintain independence while living at home.
Unveiled at IFA 2026 in Berlin, Doova uses LiDAR navigation, microphones, cameras, and artificial intelligence to move through a home and interact with its occupants.
When someone calls for help using a voice command, the robot can locate the individual, approach them, and initiate an emergency response process. If the person does not respond within 60 seconds, the system can notify family members through a live video connection.
Doova also provides medication reminders, scheduling assistance, conversation, help understanding documents, potential scam identification, and smart-home controls.
The manufacturer has not confirmed that Doova can independently detect falls without a voice command or directly contact emergency services.
WHY IT MATTERS
As populations age, technologies that support independent living are becoming increasingly important.
Traditional home assistants generally remain stationary, requiring individuals to approach them or communicate from a distance.
Mobile AI companions introduce a different approach by navigating toward people, responding to requests, and providing assistance throughout the home.
For older adults, these capabilities could offer additional support with everyday activities and communication with family members.
For caregivers, mobile AI systems could provide another way to check on loved ones without requiring constant physical presence.
However, reliability, accessibility, and privacy remain important considerations, particularly when technology is involved in potentially serious medical emergencies.
WHO BENEFITS
-
Older adults: May gain additional assistance while maintaining independence at home.
-
Families and caregivers: Can receive notifications and communicate through live video when assistance is requested.
-
Home healthcare providers: May gain new technology options to complement existing monitoring and support services.
-
AI robotics manufacturers: Gain opportunities in the growing market for home assistance and aging-related technology.
-
Smart-home technology providers: Can integrate more household functions into mobile AI systems.
WHO LOSES
-
Traditional stationary assistants: Face competition from mobile devices capable of approaching and interacting with users.
-
Basic home-monitoring providers: May face pressure to incorporate more advanced AI capabilities.
-
Households relying entirely on unverified automated assistance: Could face safety risks if systems fail to recognize emergencies or operate as expected.
-
Privacy-sensitive consumers: May be uncomfortable with mobile cameras, microphones, and personal-data collection inside their homes.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Tuya Smart has not yet announced Doova’s retail pricing or general consumer availability.
Further testing will be needed to determine how reliably the robot navigates real homes, responds to emergencies, and operates around furniture, rugs, stairs, and other obstacles.
Privacy protections, data handling, ease of use, and compatibility with existing medical alert systems will also influence consumer adoption.
As AI robotics develops, mobile companions could increasingly provide household assistance, communication, and monitoring capabilities tailored to older adults.
The larger shift is clear: AI is moving beyond answering questions to physically responding to people in their homes, creating new possibilities for independent living and family support.
