WHAT’S HAPPENING
Australian art studio ENESS has transformed a vintage ATM into an interactive installation called HP*ATM, inspired partly by the fortune-telling machine featured in the 1988 movie Big.
Visitors who participate provide several forms of input, including facial recognition, palm analysis, and responses through physical controls.
The system combines those inputs to produce a personalized psychological profile presented in the style of a poetic horoscope.
But predicting someone’s future isn’t really the point.
ENESS designed the experience to examine how easily people may accept algorithmic assessments when they’re delivered through an engaging and seemingly personalized interface.
WHY IT MATTERS
AI systems increasingly interact with people through conversational assistants, personalized recommendations, biometric technology, and automated assessments.
HP*ATM turns those trends into an experiment in perception: Does an algorithm seem more credible simply because it appears to know something personal about you?
The installation also raises questions about how much personal information people will voluntarily provide when the experience feels entertaining rather than intrusive.
