Anthropic has released a new update for Claude AI, introducing remote control capabilities for Mac using Claude Code and Cowork tools. When Claude lacks a direct connection to specific apps like Slack or Google Calendar, it resorts to mimicking human actions on the computer by utilizing the screen for navigation.
According to a recent post on the Claude blog, users can now authorize Claude in Cowork and Claude Code to operate their computer to complete tasks. When Claude encounters a lack of necessary tools, it will visually interact with the screen to execute tasks autonomously such as opening files, using the browser, and running development tools without any initial setup required.
This functionality is integrated with Dispatch, a newly launched feature that enables users to assign tasks to Claude from their iPhone and then resume work on their desktop once completed. In a demonstration by Anthropic showcased in a YouTube video, a user instructs Claude to convert a pitch deck into a PDF and attach it to a meeting invitation while being away from their Mac.
Anthropic acknowledges that while Claude’s computer usage capabilities are advancing, they are still in their early stages compared to its coding and text interaction abilities. The company emphasizes that errors may occur and advises users to exercise caution by starting with trusted applications and avoiding sensitive data.
This latest update presents Anthropic’s answer to OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent that gained popularity earlier this year. While OpenClaw operates locally and integrates with messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram using a skill-based system for various tasks, configuring it securely can be complex.
In contrast, Claude’s version offers more stringent security measures. The system follows a permission-first approach and seeks user consent before accessing new applications. Currently exclusive to Mac users, whereas OpenClaw is compatible with macOS, Windows, and Linux.
The newly added feature is currently accessible in research preview mode for subscribers of Claude Pro and Max services. Earlier this month, additional enhancements were made to Claude including support for inline visual content for clearer responses. Anthropic also introduced a memory import tool enabling users to transfer conversations and memories from other AI providers into Claude, easing the transition for new users.
