ElevenLabs, the AI firm gradually becoming synonymous with AI voice-over and narration, unveiled two agreements with film celebrities on Tuesday that are bound to upset opponents of AI in very different ways. Texas native Matthew McConaughey is deepening his financial ties with the AI company, merging some of his minor creative work with it. Meanwhile, the legendary Cockney actor Michael Caine, aged 92, is being welcomed into ElevenLabs’ somewhat ominously named “Iconic Marketplace”. McConaughey is set to “invest an undisclosed amount” in the company and incorporate its product into one of his regular creative processes. In a statement flavoured with Silicon Valley jargon, McConaughey expressed admiration for ElevenLabs’ ability to translate core technology into widely used products by creators and businesses. When asked about McConaughey’s ownership stake, Gizmodo reached out to ElevenLabs for clarification. Essentially, McConaughey is integrating ElevenLabs’ technology into his multimedia project known as “Lyrics Of Livin’ with McConaughey”. The project consists of a weekly newsletter featuring McConaughey’s musings and stories, which he narrates himself. The upcoming development hints at a Spanish-language edition of “Lyrics Of Livin’” using an AI-generated version of McConaughey’s voice. This new iteration will be called “Lyrics Of Livin’ *con* McConaughey”. On a separate note, the Iconic Marketplace introduced Michael Caine as its latest member and primary figurehead on Tuesday. The marketplace offers licences for AI voices and intellectual property from historical icons for various creative ventures. Most voices available come from deceased figures like Maya Angelou, John Wayne, Judy Garland, and Richard Feynman. Among the 26 icons in the marketplace, only Art Garfunkel and Liza Minnelli are alive besides Caine. Despite this, ElevenLabs’ selection of Caine’s voice as “iconic” remains undisputed. Interested parties can now acquire a digitised version of Caine’s voice through ElevenLabs for their projects at a price that will be disclosed upon project details submission. It is safe to assume that this cost is significantly lower than hiring Caine himself to lend his distinctive voice to your project.
