Home Depot is moving AI beyond answering home-improvement questions. Its systems are beginning to help contractors plan jobs, build material lists, find products and move those materials toward the jobsite — connecting AI directly to real-world commerce.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Home Depot reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter performance, with growth across 13 of its 16 merchandising categories and continued momentum with professional contractors.

Alongside investments in inventory, delivery and Pro services, the company is expanding its use of artificial intelligence.

One example is Home Depot’s Material List Builder, an AI-powered tool that allows contractors to describe a project using text, voice or existing documents and turn that information into a structured list of materials.

Home Depot says contractors using the tool are building lists and purchasing more products through the platform.

WHY IT MATTERS

This is where enterprise AI starts becoming more important.

The AI is not simply answering:

“What materials do I need?”

It is beginning to connect:

project planning → product selection → inventory → pricing → purchasing → delivery.

That turns AI into part of the actual workflow.

WHO BENEFITS

Contractors could spend less time creating material lists, searching for products and coordinating purchases.

Home Depot could gain more contractor business by making it easier for professionals to manage projects from planning through delivery.

Customers may also benefit from faster product searches, recommendations and more efficient fulfillment.

WHO LOSES

Smaller suppliers and retailers could face greater pressure if large chains combine AI, massive product inventories and nationwide delivery networks into one connected system.

Some administrative and planning work traditionally handled manually could also become increasingly automated.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Home Depot is already expanding AI across customer search, product recommendations, employee tools and contractor services while continuing to shorten delivery times.

The bigger shift is easy to see.

AI is moving beyond helping contractors think about the job.

It is starting to help organize the work needed to actually get the job done.
