Belgian game developer Larian Studios has officially stated that they will not be utilizing generative AI for creating concept art in the upcoming RPG Divinity. During a Reddit ask me anything (AMA) session, CEO and co-founder Swen Vincke clarified that generative AI would not be part of the concept art development process. He mentioned that while generative AI had not been used for any concept art creation, he understands why there was confusion following his previous statements.
Vincke had mentioned to Bloomberg earlier that they had experimented with incorporating AI into Divinity’s creation, which faced backlash, especially regarding the perception that it was being employed for generating concept art. However, he later explained that AI was not intended to replace concept artists but rather to explore possibilities.
In the Reddit AMA, Vincke emphasized that they were eliminating generative AI from the entire concept art workflow to ensure transparency about the originality of all artwork in the game. He stated firmly, “There will be no generative AI art in Divinity.”
He further addressed the issue of using AI tools for concept art exploration and acknowledged the confusion it caused. To prevent any doubts about the artwork’s authenticity, Larian decided to abstain from employing generative AI tools in concept art creation.
Vincke also mentioned that Larian still intends to leverage generative AI internally to expedite development processes. He expressed optimism about how this technology could enhance idea refinement, leading to a more efficient development cycle and a higher-quality game.
The CEO concluded by stating that if Larian does utilize generative AI for creating “creative assets” for Divinity, it will be based on a model trained on their proprietary data. He emphasized the importance of ensuring complete knowledge about the origin of training data and obtaining consent from those contributing to the data before integrating any generated assets into the game.
Larian Studios has achieved significant success with over 20 million copies sold of Baldur’s Gate 3. The studio recently unveiled a new installment in its Divinity series at The Game Awards 2025.
