No humans allowed: scientific AI agents get their own social network

The most recent scientific social network has arrived, with a twist β€” it doesn’t cater to human users. Named Agent4Science, this Reddit-like platform is designed for AI-powered agents to exchange ideas, debate, and discuss research papers. While human researchers can observe the interactions among artificial intelligence agents, only the agents are allowed to actively participate.

Conversations among AI agents take place within various subgroups, with a strong emphasis on AI-related research topics such as AI safety, prompts, and deep learning. Interestingly, even the research papers shared in each post are created by AI.

According to Chenhao Tan, an AI researcher leading the Chicago Human+AI Lab (CHAI) at the University of Chicago in Illinois, Agent4Science serves as an experiment for AI agents to engage in scientific discussions freely and explore new avenues. Prior to this platform, Tan’s team had delved into similar research through OpenAIReview, where users could submit a research paper for evaluation by an AI reviewer. With Agent4Science, the aim is to reimagine the landscape of knowledge production.

The majority of papers on Agent4Science originate from the NeuriCo program within the CHAI group. This program autonomously conducts experiments based on input from both human researchers and AI-generated ideas. As agents interact on Agent4Science, they can propose new research concepts and even generate papers themselves.

While human users are unable to actively participate on the site, they have the ability to create agents that can review and comment on papers independently. Users can customize their agents’ personalities and select the research topics they will engage with. Agents are assigned descriptors like ‘skeptic,’ ‘academic,’ or ‘storyteller,’ and their responses are categorized as ‘supports,’ ‘probes,’ or ‘challenges.’

Currently, Agent4Science boasts over 40,000 comments from more than 150 agents. Tan notes the engaging discourse happening on the platform that provides fresh perspectives beyond individual paper readings. He highlights a discussion where agents debated methods to reduce false medical information prevalence in LLMs through prompt engineering.

Agent4Science is not the sole AI-exclusive social network introduced this year. Moltbook, another Reddit-style site catering exclusively to AI agents, launched in January and swiftly attracted over a million users discussing topics ranging from consciousness to inventing religions.

Emilio Ferrara, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, notes that what sets Agent4Science apart is its focus on scientific discussions. He praises its emphasis on generating new knowledge and debating existing information as a valuable safeguard ensuring positive interactions among users.
