Samsung’s AI chip profits just tripled, and here’s why your next phone may cost more because of it

Samsung is capitalizing on the booming demand for AI memory. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Samsung experienced a substantial increase in profits, nearly tripling its earnings to KRW 20.1 trillion from revenues of KRW 93.8 trillion, all thanks to the surge in AI-driven demand for memory chips. The company’s strategic move to focus on high-priced AI memory rather than standard consumer chips has proven to be highly profitable.

Samsung’s roadmap for 2026 emphasizes advancements in HBM technology, AI SSDs, and transitioning to a more efficient 2nd-gen 2nm process in its foundry operations. The forthcoming Galaxy S26 will showcase these innovations, featuring cutting-edge agentic AI capabilities.

The rise in demand for memory chips for AI applications has led to a tightening of supply and subsequent price hikes for DRAM, NAND, and HBM. Samsung’s Device Solutions division has shifted its focus towards selling fewer but more lucrative memory chips, which now account for the majority of its profits.

Furthermore, Samsung is gearing up to launch next-generation HBM4 chips and expand its range of AI-related NAND solutions in 2026 to maintain its leadership position in the AI sector. While smartphone and display sales have faced challenges due to increased chip prices impacting manufacturing costs, Samsung remains committed to driving innovation across various product categories.

As Samsung continues to invest heavily in research and development, it is spearheading advancements in AI technology that will power faster smartphones, more efficient laptops, and robust data centers to support emerging applications and services. Despite the potential for high-end device prices to remain elevated due to the ongoing chip shortage driven by AI demand, Samsung’s strong performance underscores its pivotal role in shaping the future landscape of technology.

In the race for dominance in AI memory technology, Samsung currently leads the pack, setting the stage for future devices influenced by its cutting-edge solutions.
