A newly published Meta patent application describes technology that could combine smart glasses, artificial intelligence and facial recognition to identify people captured by wearable cameras.
The application was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in February 2026 and published in August.
It describes systems capable of recognizing individuals and using information about those people, locations and surrounding events to help generate and organize media.
The filing does not mean Meta has decided to release facial recognition on its consumer smart glasses. A patent application protects an idea or potential technology; it is not a product announcement.
WHY IT MATTERS
Smart-glasses privacy concerns have largely centered on one question:
Is that person recording me?

Someone may be comfortable appearing incidentally in another person’s photograph while being far less comfortable with software automatically attempting to determine their identity.
And unlike a phone held up for a photograph, smart glasses can operate from a person’s normal line of sight.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The immediate question is whether Meta ever turns the technology described in the patent into a consumer feature.
It may not.
But the filing shows how quickly the technical possibilities surrounding wearable AI are expanding.
Smart glasses are becoming better at seeing, hearing and understanding the world around their wearer.
