United Airlines grounds flights nationwide over technology issue

United Airlines has resumed its services following a technical outage that caused flights to be grounded across the country on Wednesday evening, resulting in more than 1,000 flights being delayed and dozens being canceled.

The airline explained that the disruption was a result of a problem with its weight and balance computer system. “We have resolved the underlying technological issue and although some delays are expected to persist, our team is actively engaged in restoring normal operations,” United Airlines stated.

The outage commenced shortly after 6 p.m. Eastern Time and lasted for a few hours. United Airlines confirmed that it had halted mainline flights at their departure points due to the technical problem, stressing that safety remains their foremost concern.

FlightAware reported that over 1,000 flights were delayed and more than 40 were canceled. United Airlines is offering meals and hotel accommodations to impacted passengers.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) acknowledged the disruption, specifying that it was isolated to United’s operations and did not affect the broader air traffic control system.

United Airlines affirmed that the incident was not due to a cyberattack and assured that flights already en route would continue to their destinations. Ground stops were put in place at major hubs such as Newark, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, and Houston.
