YouTube is launching a new AI upscaling feature to enhance the quality of standard-definition videos. This AI-powered tool will automatically enhance low-resolution videos, denoted by a “Super resolution” label, which users and creators can choose to disable if desired. Additionally, YouTube is introducing immersive previews and contextual search functions for TV users. Creators now have the ability to upload larger, higher-quality thumbnails due to the increased 50MB file size limit. The platform’s latest feature will use AI to upscale all videos automatically. In the past, many uploaded videos were only at 240p quality, while today, some creators still stick to 1080p resolution uploads. Google is now introducing a YouTube feature that enhances low-resolution videos using AI technology to offer better resolutions for those who are particular about image quality. Initially focusing on upgrading videos below 1080p to HD resolution, YouTube plans to extend this enhancement to 4K resolution in the future. Videos enhanced through YouTube’s AI will be labeled as “Super resolution” after upscaling. Users have the option to opt-out if they prefer not to watch upscaled content, with the original files and resolutions remaining intact. Although initially thought to be exclusive to the TV app, YouTube confirmed that this feature will be available across all platforms including smartphones and web browsers. For TV users, YouTube has made additional improvements for a better viewing experience such as more immersive previews when browsing channels on the homepage and a refined “contextual search on TVs” function that prioritizes videos from a specific channel in search results. Moreover, creators can now upload more detailed thumbnails with an increased file size limit of 50MB compared to the previous 2MB cap. These updates are currently being rolled out by YouTube and will be visible on user screens soon. Furthermore, YouTube has introduced new Like button animations and revealed a significant user interface redesign for Android and iOS platforms.
